Best Anti-Virus Software

M

Mike Lambert

I am new to this newsgroup and after reading some of the previous posts,
I see that this subject has been discussed before. But, I recently have
been put in charge of purchasing and setting up a server for our small
business and for virus protection and I don't have much experience with
this. In the past we had individual seats of McAfee Virus Scan but now that
we have a server I want to run everything through it so all copies stay
up-to-date. But the owner was telling me that he knows a guy that swears on
some freeware virus program. He did not mention a name but said he didn't
want to spend the money if he didn't have to. So, what is out there for
free virus protection software that will work in a server environment? We
only have a basic system here. We use the server for logging in, storing
files, and GPO's to lock down workstations. We use Windows SBS 2003 and we
do not use Exchange. Most of the employees use Outlook ,but some use
Outlook Express for their e-mail. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks
for any and all replies.

TTBOMK freeware solutions are going to be solely for non-commercial
use, not for use in a small business environment. Tell the owner to
open his checkbook and do the right thing.

Well, it's nice to hear someone that agrees with me. You know how it
is, the owner hears about some great new product that is wonderful until the
employees try to use it. It's hard to convince the owner unless he hears it
from a bunch of people. Can you reccomend one of the brands out there? Or
should I just stick with McAfee . Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm not well as well versed on enterprise solutions as others here will
be. From what I've read, though, TrendMicro's solutions for
Small/Medium business come highly rated. Their strong suit is
integration. Check out www.trendmicro.com

I would recommend Sophos Antivirus. We use it at work, and I also have
small business edition for my home network, which comprises 3 desktops and 2
laptops.

Have a look at their website on

http://www.sophos.co.uk

This will show you all the options, and even allow you to download an
evaluation copy.

Thanks for the reccomendations!! I'll take a look. After looking
through some of the other posts it looks like a few other names are brought
up: AVGFree, KAV, Kaspersky, or NOD32. Are all of these virus protection
products for small business? How do you ever finally pick one product from
the seemingly huge amount possiblities? Why is it that Norton or McAfee are
seldom brought up as good software for businesses?
Sorry for rambling, I am just trying to understand all options so I can
give my reccomendation to the owner and be able to back it up. Thanks again
for all those that reply!!

Well, for what it is worth, my company, a huge international oil
corporation, uses McAfee. But, the only virus I ever had was when I
was using McAfee, so go figure. Norton has a reputation for being a
resource hog. But they have a very good virus detection record. I quit
using Norton when they went to the "Product Activation" scam. I now
use NOD32, but I don't know anything about server applications.

I think all of the "free" AVs are only free to non-commercial users,
not to any businesses.

It's not that they are not good solutions, it's just that there are
others to consider that don't have the benefit of deep pockets for
advertising.

From what I've heard, the 'Corporate' Version of Norton Antivirus is
highly respected.

How many employees does this business have?

Are all of your workstations Windows 2000 or XP?

The registration of a specific copy of Norton is tied to a specific
computer, so that one cannot run a single license program on multiple
systems. That's not really the scam. The scam would be doing product
activation stops one from doing.

Richard,

We have about 12 computers that need anti-virus software. And yes, we
are all on Windows XP or 2000.
