best AGP card

Hello. I'm currently using an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and I'd like to upgrade.
Does anyone know what the most powerful AGP graphics card on the market it?
I'm not particularly bothered about the manufacturer.
Also the processor is a Pentium4 2.6Ghz so bare in mind this may be a
bottleneck.
Thanks.

The most powerful AGP-board is the GeForce 7800GS. But as you say, the
CPU is the bottleneck, so going for a more mid-range board might be
just as good. I'm now sure what will give the sweetspot between your
CPU and GPU. I might guess a X1600 Pro AGP or a 6800GS?

Well he's written the same question on the ATI and Nvidia groups, but as
this is the ATI one can I assume you are saying that the X1600 PRO is
the top AGP card from ATI? I'm staying with ATI these days.....

The top-card of ATI on AGP is the x800 XT PE (or the X850 XT PE?)

The 850 XT PE. If it can't run what you want, you better get a new
computer. It does run hot though. I bought a Sapphire and even with the
massive fan it still ran way hot, with no OCing. Its ok in an air
conditioned room.

The X1600 looks interesting and the right kind of price. However it looks
very thick. Do you know how it compares with the 9800? Will it fit into my
board as all the PCI slots are full and I don't want to have to remove a
card to make room.
Thanks.

I also have a 9800; my CPU is an AMD 2500+.

AIT currently has a deal for refurbished X850Pro AGP cards for $170
shipped - that's the Canadian deal.

They don't have stock right now, but I put my name in, because that'll
be a good bang for the buck. Not the fastest card, but for the money, I
doubt you'll get a much better deal.

Lemme know if that interests you and I'll see if I can dig up the link.

I believe there will be one or more new cards based on the ATI graphics
chips
coming out with in the next few months.
Do not know if any of the new cards will be AGP.
Currently the ATI 850 line is the most powerful AGP card from the ATI camp.
The ATI X1600 is the best bang for the buck right now.
But would not be much faster then the 9800 Pro you have now.
But the X1600 does have features which will help for future games.
But I think you should wait a month or two, when new cards come out,
older cards should be dropping in price.

The best bang for the buck I've seen recently is
http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=2984012
16 pipes at 400MHz, 256bit memory at 500/1gig.
For ~$130 delivered, with a 1 year warantee, it's a great buy.

I just purchased one. It's a very nice step up from my Del "DULL" stock
underclocked 9700-TX.

I've got a bit more CPU, than you (Mobile Barton at 2.4G), and am
probably somewhat CPU limited in a few games. Still, you should see a
respectable performance increase, and will be able to run higher levels
of AA and Aniso for improved visual quality w/o any problems.

FWIW, with unchanged settings, rFactor and Pacific Fighters see a 60~90%
FPS boost. Alternately, I can crank up the filtering to far greater
levels than before, while still enjoying a healthy FPS boost. Mimimum
FPS, seen in big furballs or during race starts, is vastly improved.
(Sry, no numbers yet, I'm just going by 'feel.')

I have a 3.06 cpu and just upgraded to an x800 xt from ebay for 150. Works
very well in my system.
