benchmark for Toshiba laptop

After having increased my RAM to 2 MB on my old Toshiba Satellite A30 I
can now easily use Win XP SP3, but the applications have not really
accelerated. - To the contrary the cooler fan runs all the time and
makes noise. -

Is there any benchmark test which allows to compare the speed of my
applications with standards so that I can see whether my subjective
impression of slowness is justified compared to normal speed ?

Application start times won't show a significant improvement with a
memory increase. Toshiba notebooks tend to have drives that get
very warm ( near 130-F limit ). Adding memory shouldn't cause the
fans to run unless the newly added RAM is raising the internal temp.
You might want to download/install SpeedFan 4.37 and use it to
monitor your system temps.

One thing that helps application start times is the layout.Ini that XP
uses to place certain drivers and frequently used apps to the start
of your XP volume during a defrag. 3rd-Party defrag tools such as
Perfect Disk 2008 also employ file placement. If you haven't done
a full system defrag in a while you should do this to help load times.

Your applications? You would need to time them yourself, before and
after the installation of the RAM.
