Hi, I am going to build 64bit system using AMD processor.
I need to run the computer for highly complicated computation...
What is the best solution for this? I am looking for HP series with AMD
Athlon 64 bit dual
core...

Really appreciate your help...
Thank you

What's your question? Are you asking if you should get a single core A64,
a dual core A64 or an Opteron system with dual core Opterons? Or are you
asking which components to buy to build a system yourself (in which case
you would buy the components from Newegg not HP)?

Oh, sorry. I make you guys confusing.... Let's ask you again...

I am going to build AMD Athlon 64 bit dual core system with 8GB ram,
400GB hard drive...
Is that easy to build my own system by buying each component? I don't
have
any experience to build the customized computer,,, so I am looking for
some informations to build my own system like what is the mother
board,,,
where can I buy the components cheaply... where can I get the
instruction to build
the customized system... so on...

Or if you think buying the pc from the vendor like HP is much easier,
which one is
the most powerful with 8GB ram capability?

Appreciate your understanding this stupid questions from the
beginner...
Regards,

With no experience, I cannot recommend you attempting to build a high-end
machine like that.

Since you do not specify what you are going to do with the computer, I cannot
tell you if it is even a reasonable configuration. For example, 32-bit Win XP
will not use 8 GB RAM, so 4+ GB will likely be wasted...

Regards,

You can't put 8G on an Athlon 64. The problem is that no one makes 2G
unbuffered DDR DIMMs so the most memory that you can put on an A64 is 4G.
If you need more than that you'll have to build a 940 pin Opteron system.
The 940 pin Opterons use registered DIMMs which are available in 2G sizes
(although they are pricey). An Opteron 2xx motherboard will generally have
4 DIMM sockets per Opteron chip so you can put 16G on the board using 2G
DIMMs or 8G using 1G. A pair of dual core Opteron's will give you 4
processors. Note: there are 939 pin 1xx Opterons, these are really just
Athlon 64s, they go on the same motherboards as the A64 and have the same
memory restrictions. If 8G is just a wish list item you'll find that a
dual core A64 X2 (or a dual core 939 pin Opteron 1xx) will give you the
most bang for the buck.

For motherboards you'll want to choose an Nvidia Nforce 4 Ultra for an
Athlon 64/A64 X2 system. For an Opteron pick an Nforce 4 Pro card. Any
name brand will do. I have the MSI K8N Neo 4 with an X2 4400+ and 4G, it
works perfectly with FC4 and a 2.6.15 kernel. An ASUS or a Tyan or an Abit
should all work just as well. For an Opteron system you might consider a
SuperMicro board as well.

For a graphics card you'll want to pick something from Nvidia. Nvidia has
much better Linux support then ATI.

Configuring a system on the MonarchComputer site is very easy and they
have a wide range of choices for Athlon 64 and Opteron system components.
They do a good job of building the systems and the prices are reasonable,
they tend to be slow to deliver. Monarch will sell you a system with no OS
on it which is the best choice if you like to do your own Linux installs,
you can also buy one with Linux installed but that costs more. HP offers a
more limited set of choices. They have both A64 and Opteron systems. You
can get an HP workstation with Redhat on it, there also seems to be a way
to buy them with no OS (actually FreeDOS which is how the big guys get
around Microsoft's contract which prohibits them from shipping a system
with no OS). In Europe they offer desktop systems with Linux as well, but
in the US Linux is only an option on workstations.

First thing you need to do is find an old junk system and strip it down to
nothing. then you will at least have an idea of what you're doing. now,
before you buy anything, decide what OS ('s) you want to run. Take that
into consideration when purchasing hardware. There are some guides to
building your computer on the internet. a search for that should find
plenty of them. Study them. now buy your hardware and assemble it. I like
to test the MB/CPU/RAM before I waste time mounting bad components and
have to pull everything apart again. I do this by setting the MB on a box,
plugging in the video card, pcu (w/cooler), Ram and sometimes KB. Connect
PSU and short the start pins on the MB to power up. If there's no problem
I start assembling everything. Make sure you mount the MB on the standoffs
that will come with the case. Saw one guy actually assemble one without
any standoffs and then wonder whjy it didn't work.:)

where can I buy the components cheaply... where can I get the

Where for parts? Well I always check pricewatch.com and yahoo sho[ing for
beat prices.
Or if you think buying the pc from the vendor like HP is much easier,

Certainly easier, but I wouldn't own one. Proprietary parts etc. leave you
in a pickle when something goes wrong are you want to add something.

I am sure others will ask the same question: why 8 gig? *I* realize why 8
gig *can* be useful for certain types of work, especially video editing and
3D rendering. But I just want to be sure of two things:
(a) Do you do something like that with your computer?
(b) Do you realize Windows XP Pro supports max of 4 gig RAM? I'm betting
Vista will support much more. Current Server 2003 supports more.

Regards,

I can also agree that you are in over your head.
You are aware of the current issues with machines and 4GB of RAM, much less
8?
Have you a clue what you want, or are you just looking for a machine with
"big numbers"?

If you cannot even do your own research on motherboards, how can you expect
to build a computer like you are describing?

Your post indicates that you have very little knowledge or experience, which
is very bad when you are attempting to do what you want to do.

I am not knocking you, just being honest (even though it may be brutal).

If you have any experience in taking apart and assembling mechanical items,
be it car engines, electrical repair, then building a computer will be no
problem. Just don't panic when you have all your parts in front of you. The
manual that comes with the motherboard(ASUS and MSI both have good
instructions)tells you how to install everything and will also tell you how
to setup your bios. If you don't have any experience in assembly and repair,
you may want a buddy around to help, or at the very least, as was stated in
another thread, get an old system and tear it down and reassemble it so you
know what your getting into. Make sure you work with the bios because if you
don't get that right, your computer may not work as it should.
