I have a laptop with a 17'' screen. When I wanted to present a ppt
presentation last month the right side of the slides was cut off and it
seemed that somehow the beamer did not support a 17'' screen. I am sure it
can be configured somewhere but I have no idea how or where (laptop or
beamer?)

It's not a question of the screen size but the screen proportion, I'd bet.
Most beamers project a 4:3 image (that is 4 units wide by 3 high)

Lots of newer laptops have extra wide screens; if yours is one of these, try
setting the video display back to, say, 1024x768. It'll probably put black
bars on each side and center your ppt presentation in the middle, but should
project w/o getting cut off.
