BCM without Exchange

Craig

The new version 2 update tutorial makes it seem that you can just have
people access your file on your computer to view your contacts. Would this
mean that you don't have to use an Exchange server? That would be nice, I
don't want to go through the expense just to share contact info with three
people.

You do not need Exchange Server, however you do you Windows Professional,
anything below that will not be sufficient.

Sharing the BCM database should work with any email provider (Exchange,
pop3, etc). All you machines need to be in the same sub-net though. And
you probably need XP SP2.

Thanks everyone for the replies. One more question though, what if we all
connect over the internet and not in an office. We have an intranet site
and ftp ability, can this work?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Craig,

It probably won't work, as the sharing feature in BCM is designed for
in-house same-subnet/same-domain/same-workgroup environments. Sharing a db
over the internet or intranet is not supported or recommended.

What about if I do subscribe to an Exchange hosting service, I found that
there are companies out there (1and1.com) that offer Exchange server access
for a reasonable monthly fee per person, would that help me or no, because
the BCM isn't Exchange dependent. Is there anyway that anyone can suggest
to get this done?

Thanks again for the help.

Hi Craig,

The new sharing feature in the BCM Update has nothing to do with Exchange.
BCM uses an MSDE database and shares it out via permissions, either stated
in a workgroup or implied in a domain. If all of your company's machines
are in one building on the same workgroup, then sharing would work for you,
depending on the speed/traffic on your network. If you're talking about a
"virtual office" where employees are scattered in different locations, then
BCM sharing wouldn't work for you.
