BCM will not open unless I'm the Administrator

When my account is a member of Power Users, BCM gives me the error "The set
of folders could not be opened. The server is not available......"

When I assign the account as an Administrator troubleshoot, everything works
just fine.

The account has always been part of BCMUsers, but BCMUsers doesn't seem to
work. I removed the users, rebooted, re-assigned them several times, but
nothing helped.

I also created a new account to see if the error was a bug in my account and
assigned the new account to BCMUsers and Power Users and still could not get
access.

I saw a post by Leonid who replied to someone who seemed to have similar
problems, and tried to activate any SQL files in services.msc. I found one
that was set to manual start and changed it to Automatic. I then logged off
and tried again. That didn't work either.

Finally, just for the sake of trying something different, I uninstalled
Outlook and re-installed it. You guessed it....no help.

We probably need to track down where the security errors are occuring. You
can download the tools from www.sysinternals.com called regmon and filemon
to do that. Use that "send a smile" tool I link to in my signature to send
feedback directly to Microsoft.

I'll test this.

Which version of BCM are you using?

Ignore the PowerUsers and BcmUsers groups stuff. I think BcmUsers is a
leftover from BCM v1. BCM's sharing model only considers whether a user
created a database, and is thus the owner, and whether any other user
has been made shared user.

Some groups may have permissions to do certain things (e.g.
Administrators and PowerUsers), but conceptually the Bcm model ignores
that. The exception to that model is when a machine must be
reconfigured; e.g. to open a port in the firewall or to add a new NT
user.

My first question would be whether your login has permission to use the
database.

Login as another user who has administrator privileges. Use Outlook/BCM
and attach to the database in question. Run the sharing wizard. Does
your login show up checked in the users pane? If not, then you don't
have permission to use the database. Check it to add yourself as a
shared user to that database.

If you have sql tools, you can check the permissions on the database
without using Outlook/BCM.

Well, it looks like I got it working. I loaded BCM from the original CD and
tried to get it working. Once I downloaded the updated version, it seems to
be working fine.

Since I'm only using this on one computer, am I required to have the SQL
Server Service Manager running all the time? I installed BCM so I can learn
how to use it, and will only use it on this machine right now.

I happy to see that it's working for you.

BCM is an SQL application. You are required to run the SQL service, but the
SQL manager can be exited.

I would ignore it, if I were you.
