BCM 2007 - Can't customize forms?

I am trying to customize BCM to my liking, but just hit up against the 40
item limit for user-defined fields.

I have customized Outlook before using the developer tab, so I thought I'd
try that in BCM.

I added one text field to my BCM contact, then went to Publish just to test
it out, and received the following error message, "Can't publish form due to
MAPI error. BCM cannot save this item because it doesn't recognize some of
it's properties."

Please tell me I can customize BCM more than just adding some user-defined
fields... Honestly all I've done is add one blank text field, nothing crazy.

BCM does not support editting its forms in that manner.

Wow, well I guess that answers the question.

Dare I ask why they have a developer tab, and have all the functions there
to add text fields, drop-down fields, then give you the option to "publish"
all those changes, if it's not allowed?
