WinXP Media Center Edition is a _superset_ (iow, it does
_everything_ WinXP Pro can do (except join a domain), plus contains
additional multi-media features) of WinXP Pro.

Thanks to you both for your responses.

When you talk about not being able to join a domain, I assume you are
not talking about my being able to use the laptop with DHCP on my home
lAN? Is that correct? Would it relate mainly to not being able to join
a corporate domain?

Thanks

I do not know why people keep giving this link when it is nearly impossible
to find a comparative spreadsheet or analysis.

You're right, you'll still be able to use this machine on your home
LAN. A "domain" is a Microsoft LAN entity that controls (enforces
policies, etc) a bunch of machines on a corporate LAN.

You're welcome.

That's correct. You'll have no problem joining WinXP MCE to a
peer-to-peer workgroup.

Would it relate mainly to not being able to join
a corporate domain?

Exactly.
