Hi, all. I need to create a barcode for a 15- to 20-digit number
(not for a mailing address). Can this be done in Word XP? Different
Office product? Different release (i.e. 2003, 2007 ...)? Is it
necessary to obtain a third-party product to complete this task? I
have the Office XP Suite and a XP operating system.
Thanks.
The only kind of barcode that any version of Word can create by itself is
PostNet (using a BARCODE field), but that's now obsolete.
For other kinds of barcode (3 of 9, UPC/EAN, etc.) you need either a font
that lets you type digits and displays the corresponding bars, or a program
that accepts the number and produces the barcode as a graphic file (gif,
jpg, etc.). For the kinds of barcode applications that involve check digits
and start/stop codes, an external program is much better; even for simple
applications, you'll usually get a better result (more easily recognized by
a barcode reader) with a graphic than with a font.
