Bandwidth of shared folders

Hi,
I have a friend that tells me that if you have a VPN
network, and you share folders, your network gets a lot of
traffic. Is that true?
I'm sure it is not because I have seen huge networks that
share folders and there is no traffic, just by sharing
them, when I used the files in the shared folder there is
traffic, but not before.

Any information about this?

The act of sharing folders uses no traffic.
The act of /accessing/ or /browsing/ those shared folders
is what causes traffic.
