BAD SECTORS ERROR

Bobby

Hi, I did a CHKDSK on my C:\ drive (1st Partition)
It says it has 8 bad sectors on it. What steps do I, or
can I take to correct and fix these bad sectors on my
primary partition (1) c:\ drive to correct this error.

C:\>CHKDSK

When I imply the ( CHKDSK /F ) it does not fix the problem.
I even restated the server and let the operating system
try to fix the problem that way. And it does not ( even by
trying several times ).

("I wish Microsoft would make a special tool for this")

I removed the Hardrive from the 1st server and placed it
as a slave on the second server (with the same OS
installed "Windows 2000 Pro") Then i tryed to do the same
task ( CHKDSK /F ), and it still wont fix the problem.

Also, when i tryed on the 1st server with this drive
mounted and windows running, to do a "Defrag Procedure",
It goes until a certain point, then it makes my OS Re-Boot
into a ( BSOD Screen ) as it starts to count up.

NOTE: If i make a image of the drive, will it take the bad
sectors with it.
Is it software based or Hardware based error??
Also, are there any partucular software to fix this,
Such as Norton ect. ect.

problem. (e-mail address removed)

It's nothing to worry about and nothing you can correct. Chkdsk has
just marked a few sectors as bad and they therefore won't be used by the
operating system.

Reformatting the drive will often mark the bad sectors as good again, but as
the previous poster said, it's not necessary and is nothing to worry about.
Relax.

To get an authoritative view on the issue, download and run
the free diagnostic program that your disk manufacturer makes
available on his home site. It is non-destructive.

There is something to worry about, The Server keeps
freezing up, Also when my Anti-Virus Program is doing a
backend scan (AKA) "Real Time Scan"
It freezes up the server.

If the server is Idiled, It freezes and I would have to do
a Hard shut down. By (pressing the power botton).
Doing this, will make the OS more Fragmented, (Hence) More
Bad Sectors and more frequent (BSOD-Blue Screen Of Death).

Also when i want to DeFragment the drive, When it gets
about 5%, it shuts down my server and gives me a BSOD.

Its becoming more frequent of the BSOD.
There has to be a way of fixing the bad sectors on this
drive, (Without losing any Data or Reformating)
and keeping all my current settings intact.

I wish microsoft would just find a way to prevent Bad
Sector problem in OS's.
Or make a tool that is made just for this type of problem.

Ive been getting this problem every 3 months,
And every 3 months i have to reformat my Hardrive.
And its getting extremly anoying.

By what i gather from what Tech people say,
NTFS is supposenly to be a very strong format and extremly
stable.
As every 3 months im constantly getting Bad Sectors
problems I am highly doubting it.
Even if i format the drive and install a whole new OS.
Its becoming an extreme anoyance and im even doubting
this supposingly strong and Stable NTFS format.

Kind Regards
Bobby.

Were I unfortunate to be in your shoes, I would take a real hard look
at the server, looking at the possibility of a faulty motherboard.

As you say you have re-installed and used a restore (I expect after a
format), are you sure you told restore not to overwrite as that will
introduce all the failures you had before - additionally I would run
Stinger and also Easyclean before backing up - you surely must have a
backup going back to a time when the computer was OK

Also being in an administrative position, I presume that you have set
up the OS in the minimum size of partition so you disturb nothing else
on the machine - I need not tell you the swicthing off using the power
input is bound to cause bad sectors eventually.

For your information, my stats are:
Win 2000, Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz
1 Gb memory,ADSL
200+200 GB disks partitioned C:D:E;as 7.81,80.84.97.65
F: G: as 88.65,97.66 for data
