Bad Image : Error message

When I booted up my computer this morning it ran checkdisk, then instead of
going into Windows it produced the error message "The application or DLL
C:\windows\system32\perfc000.dat is not a valid Windows image. Please check
this against your installation diskette." I cannot run system restore, even
in safe mode, as this error message continually comes up. I have a legal,
valid, expensive copy of Windows, thought I had good antivirus, and have
recently upgraded toIE7. What can I do? Pl Help...
