I have a 40G Maxter HD bought in 2001.
Tonite, Windows XP does not start. Neither does on safe mode nor Last Known
....
Have tried to boot with windows 98 boots disk and run Scandisk. Scandisk
reported bad cluster in C: @23% and could not fix it. However, the other
drives are fine (d and e). Tried to run "format c:" also reported problem at
23% and have not enough memory to carry on.
Does it mean that it is a Hardware Problem with the HD? Any software
program is able to fix bad cluster in HD, which one? Have ran c:dir also
listed the files in dos. Any way to recover the files at all?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Stephen

when my hard drive has a problem and since I back everything up I just pull
it
and put a new one in. sounds like yours has gone south

Go to the maxtor site and download its disk utility program. Run diagnostics
on the disk. If it's showing errors you'll most likely figure out what your
next step is. I've read of software programs being able to recover lost
files but I'm ignorant of which ones may be able to help you in your case.
Sorry,

I've heard SpinRight from www.grc.com works. [I haven't tried it myself]

I'm NO tech, but have had some success in the past by installing a good
h/d as master and cabling the questionable one as slave--have been able to
find and move/save important data. If this works, I'd save the important
stuff FIRST and then maybe run scandisc to hopefully *remove* the bad
sectors. Actually, if you can get your data, it would be a good time to
make a new paperweight. HTH & good luck. s

If you're feeling daring sometimes doing a low-level format will "mark-off"
the bad cluster(s) and then you can reuse the drive. you will lose all the
data on the drive and won't be able to get it back. and if you do this make
sure the other drives are not near it as sometimes it can cause data
corruption on them. If d and e are also partitions on this drive you don't
want to do this.
