Is there a way to tell if a CD is really bad. Sometimes I think its the
hardware or software and I don't want to discard the CD's if it is the
hardware or software

Simplest way is to try it in another drive on the same PC or a different
one.

Also cleaning it helps quite often. Don't forget to clean accross the groves
(ie from center out)

If it has been cleaned and will not read on at least 2 drives there is a
good change it has died.

Try the CD in another drive. If it works there but not in yours...your machine
is probably f***ed, and conversely. If the scratch affects the aerodynamic
characteristics of the CD when thrown across the room...it probably won't work
properly. It is, however, still useful as a coaster.

the best way is to test it to see if it works in several other cd-rom drive
on other computers...
