bad block

I am having problems with computer lockup. The event viewer is giving me
the following

source: disk

Event: 7

under the event description: The device, \Device\HardiskO\D has a bad block

The help/support center indicates I may have to replace hard drive.

Is there anything else that I can try to remedy problem.

The computer works at times and with some apps but will lock up frequently
and needs to be rebooted to resolve.

I can hear what sounds like the processor working in spurts, and will slowly
do processes at times and at times completely locks up.

Any ideas on what caused this?

thanks

Run "chkdsk /F" on the bad drive (from the cmd prompt).

You can confirm if you have bad blocks by running chkdsk on your
partition/drive. If blocks are bad, they are bad forever. It is a physical
condition with the hard drive.

Now, if the information in the blocks is corrupted, chkdsk may be able to
correct for that.
