backup

I try to make a backup. Starting with systemsetup and than tools and than
backup. After strating the back up I've to cross an item and than start. The
backup strat, but after 1 or 2 seconds I get the message: failed.
I've XP Home Edetion and want to make a total backup mij hard disk on an
external disk.. Who recognises this problem and maybe has a tip?
