Backup to DVD - Exchange Store and System State

H

HW

I have Exchange 2003 and Windows 2003 Servers for a small business...

I am currently using the NTBackup tool to backup Exchange IS and the System
State of the servers, and even files....

Goal:
====

To burn the 5-6GB of *.BKF (I do not want to change this method) files
weekly to my dual layer DVD Writer - while logged off - running as service.

The only requirement is for someone to physically remove and insert a new
DVD Media for backup - anyone doing this -

Lastly, I am do NOT want the Backup Execs, Legato, or other expensive
softwares out there - I know there are plenty for less tham $100, but I am
seeking someones experience or knowledge in the software and method to
accomplish this....

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hello HW,

Most DVD-Burning Software allows to do backups as well, but I guess
that's not what you are asking for.

To use ntbackup and burn that file on a DVD you'll need to go in two
steps, since ntbackup does not allow to burn on a DVD directly. So make
a backup and put it on a specific place on your harddrive. Then you'll
need to find out how to work with the DVD-Burning Software of your
choice, check if it allowes scripts or command line parameters to
automatically burn a DVD. Write a Script which burns the bkf-file and
deletes it afterwards if you wish.

Finally I would not run that thing as a service, just use task
scheduler which ntbackup uses by default. Create a backup job within
ntbackup, then open up the Task created, copy the line which initiates
your backup in the beginning of your script and run the script from
within the task.
