Backup System State

What is included in "System State" when you do a backup?
Just so that I donæ't backup things twice and waste space
(is WINDOWS, SYSTEM32 and maybe other files included?)

In a non-domain environment it includes Windows registry, COM+ database, boot and system files and system protected files.
