Any recomendations on a good backup solution for Vista? I have tried Vista
backup and HATE it. Anything similar to XP Backup utility would be great!
Free would be better.

TIA

I don't know any free backup solutions except copying your files by hand or
writing a script to back up your files for you. Someone else probably does.

Second Copy from www.centered.com is an excellent and scalable backup
program. I've used it for clients on home machines, business machines, and
servers. It only costs about $30.

Acronis True Image from www.acronis.com will do incremental backups and also
make images, which is very useful in terms of recovering a system in
minutes. It isn't free but I believe the home version is only around $40 or
so (haven't priced it).

Well, ummmm, you might hate this too because it sort of involves
linux...but...

Go to cygwin.com. Install the cygwin environment. That gives you
a unix shell and command set on windows. Your windows drives will be
visible as /cygdrive/c (and d, e, f etc). You can now use tar and gzip
to back up your data. Or cpio...

I have never used any backup solution other than doing it the only way that
is 100% guaranteed to work. I backup all my data manually. Archive backups
are done to DVD. A second archive backup is done to an external hard drive.
Incremental backups are done to a USB flash drive.

It's not free, but I think Acronis TrueImage is the best backup
program I know of.

Can someone help me? I want to make a mirror image of the hard drive on my
laptop. It have Vista Home Premium on it. I bought a Western 250 portable
hard drive and Norton Ghost 14.0. I installed Ghost and tried to back up the
complete hard drive of the laptop. Norton stops after 5% and says “Operation
cannot be performed while Windows is running. You must complete this
operation inside the recovery environment.
Can someone help me out?

You need to run Ghost from boot up. Your Ghost should be bootable. If it
doesn't boot check your BIOS settings so your CD/DVD drive will be the first
boot device.
