I am using a HP Surestore 5000 external tape drive
(2.0/4.0 gb) on windows 2000 server. I am using windows
backup because the drive did not come with software that
is compatible with windows 2000 server. The problem is
that after the first 2 gb it prompts me to insert another
tape. The task manager tells me that hardware compression
is enabled so what is wrong?

If it's only 2 gig of uncompressed that is going onto the tape then the
drive is NOT doing hardware compression. Perhaps the "hardware
compression flag" is reversed. On the otherhand if the data you are
backing up is already compressed then the hardware is not going to
"compress" it any more to speak of. You will have to determine which it is.
