I run XP Pro. I just purchased and hooked up a MAXTOR 3100 (100GB) Ext HD
for backup purposes. When I run XP "Backup" the system stops with a message
that says there is basically insufficient space. Something about the fact
that if disk is formatted as FAT32 the capacity is only 4 GB and therefore to
small.

I am totally in dark as to what this means. Ed Bott article on Win XP
Backup made easy does not address any such issue. DO I need some sort of
special format on Ext D. Is the MAXTOR the wrong type of devise for XP
backup process.

CAN SOMEONE ADVISE AND POINT ME TO MORE INFO IF THAT WOULD HELP.

THANKS for any help

A FAT32 drive or partition has a maximum file size of 4GB, and it's that
limit you're running up against.

No. Just reformat the drive as NTFS.

If you have files larger than 4 gig, then convert FAT32 to NTFS, using
the built in convert util.

Ken, Thanks for info. Used "convert" to reformat and all is working OK now.
Thanks again.

Plato, Thanks for info and time. Convert worked fine. If MS had noted in pop up window the possible need to use reformat to NTFS it would have helped spped up process and educate novice types like me what was going on. Thanks again.

I started a different thread on my problem "Maxtor OneTouch II & Dantz
Backup choke" before I came across this thread.

My problem with 250gig Maxtor is it chokes when file path length
exceeds 255 char.

What I THINK is happening is a lot of my files have long path lengths
approaching 255 char. I think the Maxtor creates a parent folder so it
could keep track of multiple backups on the same ComputerName, or
backup more than one PC.

I think this adds X number of characters depending on ComputerName to
the total path length causing a lot of my files to exceed the limit.

What I think then happens is the Dantz backup software that came with
the Maxtor aborts the backup process instead of continuing and
creating a log of files it could not backup.
