Backup problem

I have problem to backup my personal data.
I had one 40 Gb hard drive and before 5 days ago system has "fall down".
I decide to buy a new hard drive in order to use the moment and upgrade the
system.
I have connect the old hard drive as a slave in order to backup my data to
new location. As I click on folder x:/Documents and Settings/user/ it says me
"It's not accessible. Access is denied." I can remember, earlier I set My
Documents folder as Private, and maybe that is the problem.
The question is, how can I access to my old files which is located in slave
disk.
btw: I'm using the administrator account and I set up the new system with
the same usernames and passwords, but it wont work !
Sorry on my english, but I hope you will understand me.

access to
the Security tab, you must first start in Safe Mode and log on with an
account that
