Backup from internal SATA to external SATA

What is the simplest way to get "Documents and Settings" backed up on
the external drive?

I have an HP m7250n Media Center desktop with a 250GB internal SATA and
a USB 500GB external USB SATA.

I have read through the posts on this issue and I'd like to avoid the
"not responding errors" or the day-long transfers.

Isn't there someway to use the backup program in this Media Center
version of XP? When I tried to use that program, it showed no options
for using an external drive as a destination.

If I have to buy some backup software, I will, but it sure seems like
Bill Gates should have given us some modicum of backup capability.

When MS introduces extra utilities they tend to get taken to Courton on anti
competition rules
 
Well it's out there, has been for some time both in Beta form and Final
release, it works for me and until or if any litigation is filed then it
legal to use it as long as the user complies with the EULA.

Are you really looking for a backup program that will backup the *entire*
contents of your day-to-day working HDD so that in the event you have to
restore the system for one reason or another you could do so? Is that your
objective or are you only interested (for reasons I can't quite comprehend)
in solely backing up your Documents and Settings folder?

And should you be interested in a comprehensive backup system such as the
kind I'm alluding to, would you be willing to spend about $40 to $50 for
such a program, or is that outside your budget?

Both. I care a lot about saving the frequent additions to the
grandaughters' photos, etc. I would also like to quickly and easily
save enough on the external drive to survive an internal drive
disintegration. What do you have in mind?

What do you know about SyncToy?
