Backup email is missing

I use Outlook 2003 and recently put 6 months of old mesages into a backup
folder and now they are all gone! I'm screwed if this is true. They were put
there specifically for safe keeping. Any help in recovering them would be
hugely appreciated. I've tried all other support options and Microsoft has
been useless.
 
What kind of backup folder was this and how did you move the messages there?
