Going through the menu is how to do it, but the file needs to not be read-only.
IE, it can't be on the CD and once you copy it locally, you need to uncheck
read-only from the properties.

Well, in the future, you may want to use groups.google.com to search for
the answer of things that have been covered before.

And because you "backed" it up this way, instead of the way that is posted
here almost on a daily basis, ie by CLOSING Outlook and copying the pst
file, there is a good chance that what you have done is to corrupt this
"backed-up" pst file.

I sent the file to my
desktop.

"Windows" won't open a pst file. The only application that can open a pst
file is Outlook. In Outlook do File-Open-Outlook Data File. With the caveat
of the above....

Thank you : I checked the file. read only was NOT checked.
-- Now I'm trying to copy it again to the cd and I'm getting an error
message. error # ox80070021 "the process cannot access the file because
another process has locked a portion of the file". would you know what that
is? thanks again.

Try copying it to a different machine or a different location, and if you
can't,
go back to the original machine and recopy it to a new CD.

You corrupted the data file in your method of backing up, which was
incorrect
'How' is posted on a daily basis

Make sure you remove the read-only attribute the file acquired while on the
CD. Outlook can't open it when it's read-only.

Perhaps you have desktop search software installed that is indexing the file.
