Somewhere in Windows there is a back up and restore file but I can't
remember where. I have files backed up in Windows98 and would like to
restore them. I'm running XP Home. Can anyone help? Thanks

If you used the built in backup program in Windows 98 it is not compatible
with the backup program in Windows XP. The backup program in XP is not
installed with XP Home. You can install it from the Windows XP CD but as I
mentioned it will not read files made with Windows 98 backup.

I am not sure I understand your question because you have not provided
enough information.

1) If you backed up the files in Win98 they are in FAT32, and if you
want to restore them in WinXP you will net to create a partition on
your HDD formatted in Fat32 since XP uses NTFS.

2) Since you did not mention what program you used to perform the
original back-up, but alluded to Windows having a backup and restore
program, we can assume you are referring to the ntbackup utility. To
get to the utility, go to Start/Run/type "ntbackup" without the
quotations/OK.

Hope this helps.

Incorrect. NTFS is entirely optional. Windows XP can use NTFS, FAT32,
FAT16, and FAT12 in any and all combinations.

Also incorrect. The Windows XP ntbackup program is not compatible with files
backed up with Windows 98's backup utility.
