backup an activation

Hello.
Is it possible to save the activation file on a system running Windows XP
Media Center 2005 the same way that it can be done on XP Home/Professional
so that if the hard drive is formatted and a clean install of WMC is carried
out it doesn't need to be reactivated.
The instructions for doing it with a standard XP system are given here:-
http://www.aviransplace.com/index.p.../keep-your-windows-activated-after-reinstall/
Will this work with Media Center 2005?

Also I've heard that you can no longer activate OEM XP operating systems by
Dell,HP etc over the internet it has to be done over the phone. Is this
true?
Thanks.

No. You cannot reapply an activation if you
reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP.
You'll have to reactivate as you did originally.

The article you referenced is wrong.

Hi Mark,

1. The restoration procedure on that on other sites takes longer than
actually just reactivating, but yes, it's the same for MCE as it is for XP
Home/Pro.

2. Yes, that is true. It was done to curb piracy of OEM Product Keys (which
are not used for factory installs, they are only used if the buyer does a
clean install later).

This only works on a repair install, not a format.
