Backu error with USB drives

We have windows server 2000. We are using NTBackup to backup to a USB 160
Dirve using scheduler. We have had the following error message twice after
two backups:
"Windows was unable to save all data for the
file\device\harddisk\volume5\$mft. The data has been lost. The error may be
caused by failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please
try to save this file else where"
It looks like we are getting a back up on the hard drive but I am concerned
that we are not getting a complete or good backup.

Can you please tell me what this message is indicating? I have backed up
the system twice with out scheduler while I was present and we had no problem.

Thanks

This really isn't a networking question and probably belongs in a hardware
or general discussion newsgroup.
