Backspace Key does not Delete Selection

In Word 2002 for XP after selecting characters the
backspace key does not delete the selection. Also, after
selecting words, typing within the selection does not
delete what was already there, instead it keeps the old
words there instead of replacing them. Please Help!

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, check the box for "Typing replaces
selection."
