Template error? (cursor on 1st line) and problem with backspace ke

Two Problems:
1) --Template error-- When I open a new word doc. the cursor starts on the
first line of the page. It appears where it should after click "show headers
and footers". Reinstalling word did not help.

2)--Backspace Key-- Selecting tect and hitting backspace does not delete
the text as before. Instead it just brings cursor to its starting point.
Similarly, selecting text, and typing new text doesn't delete old text as
before. Again reinstalling word did not help.

This is not a problem in any other office applications except word. This was
part of an office bundle I received with my HP pavillion. Any advice?
