backing up

I have windows
XP Home. Dell computer.
I need to back up data from my quicken 2003 software.
Is there soft ware already loaded on my computer from MS that will allow me
to back up data. Not music or videos. I am unable to back up from my quicken
program to my RW. "Message is unable to access the disk in divice". I guess I
need 3rd party software.
But is the software already on my computer to do this? What would I look for?

Although Windows XP Professional Edition and XP Home both ship with
NTBackup, only XP Pro installs NTBackup by default. You can install NTBackup
for XP Home by performing the following steps:

1.. Insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
2.. Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
3.. Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup.

You can also download the "ntbackup.msi" file from here:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi Run the file from its
download location, and follow the wizard. If you have ever turned off the
"Shadow Copy" services, you will have to turn it back on.

I think what you're running into is a limitation of Quicken's backup.
Suggest backing up the Quicken data to the hard drive. Then use XP's
burning feature to burn that file to CD.

I followed your instructions and installed the nt backup. I went back to
quicken to back up file to E drive RW. still recieved "the unable to access
the dis in divice."
All I am trying to do, is take the data from quicken and back up on my E
drive to RW disk from the quicken program.
Have I not done something?
I used to use sonic as my 3rd party to do this backup. But I lost sonic
whenI up graded to Explorer 7. My thought was MS only wanted me to use a MS
product for backup.

As you can see I am not to computer savey. Any help will be appreciated.

Quicken cannot write directly to the CD-RW directly and neither can
NTBackup.

Example (where you should be - Quicken/Intuits web site):

You don't need third-party software to back up your Quicken software.
However Quicken won't back up directly to a CD.

Just backup to a folder on your hard drive, then burn the contents of that
folder to a CD.

That's almost exactly what I do. I have a folder called \QuickenBackup and
every couple of days I back up Quicken to it. I then just drag and drop its
contents to a USB thumb drive (which I recommend over using a CDRW, which is
not the most reliable of media). I actually use two 1GB thumb drives and
alternate between the two. Between the two, I have some 15-20 generations of
backup at any time.

I haven't read all the replies to you, but ... Quicken itself has a backup
feature which it appears you are aware of. NTbackup.exe, backup.exe, and
the other solutions being offered won't, I suspect help you here.
There is something keeping you from writing files to that drive,
apparently. Can you copy ANY FILE to that drive?

Try backing up to a different drive letter; if that works, then it would say
that something is wrong with the drive where you can't backup the files to.
So, it doesn't sound to me like an MS backup issue or something that
another application would cure for you. I suggest maybe taking a step back
and try to get a different view of the problem somehow.
