Backing up WinXP?

T

Tony

Hi all,

I finally have my machine set up exactly as I want it after a major upgrade
an installing WinXP. I want to back up so I can restore to this config if
anything goes wrong after this. Where is WinXP Backup?? It is supposed to be
in System Tools, but it's not on the menu (XP Home).

I have Drive Image 2002 but for some reason it fails each time I try to
create an image set either to HDD or CD, so I need to backup some other way.
What's the best and safest way to do this without having to buy yet more
software?

A Backup process must be complimented by the recovery process.

Should you use a microsoft tool to backup files, then in order to have a fully working system, then you must rebuild the PC to its current state, such as the installation of all user applications, then begin to recover the files created in 'backup'.

All too often, this backup file is on a hard disk and all too often the rebuild process may involve a replacement hard disk due to corruption of the original. In that instance the 'backup' is a waste of time.

I would strongly urge that all users of PCs amke a backup of their total hard disk drive, using a 2rd party product such as ghost or drive image.

This backup is one large file, which can be created on a partition of a single disk drive system. This image file can be copied onto a DVD or several CDs and be restored. If you have a few extra dollars, then get an external case which is attached by USB or firewire and backup to this external drive: partition this drive and creating the image file in the second partition.

Should a disaster strike, then one can get a replacement for one's C Drive and restore the image file onto the new HDD or even the primary partition of the external drive.

Typically the restore process would take less than half an hour. Think of it: your total system, Windows, MS Office, Accounting Software, Full email [usernames, passwords, email files and addressbook] and all data created by the user..all running as it was before the failure in less than the time it takes to install or do a repair install of XP!!!

Makes so much sense.

Go to help and type in asr Automated System Recovery. That will walk you
thru the process. Also create a restore point for a simple way to get stuff
back!
