Backing up Outlook

I need to begin backing up my folders, contacts, etc (basically everything)
in Outlook. I found the auto-archive feature...downloaded the .pst tool...
did an archive.

I can find the file just fine, but even though I downloaded the .pst tool I
am unable to open the archived file. What am I doing wrong?

Aloha Ben!

Until I read your post, I was simply going to the external hard drive I
archived to and double-clicking it. I followed your suggestion below and was
able to open it. Now I have another question.

I now have an "Archive Folders" with a + next to it. When you click on the
+ and expand it, I see deleted items, Sent Items, and Search folders.

I'm hoping to ALSO archive my calendar and contacts. Can I do this?

Thanks. :)

Aloha debnett,

Calendar certainly - right-click the calendar folder, go to Properties and
set the AutoArchive settings on the proper tab. Contacts? I suppose you
could but I've never heard of anybody archiving Contacts before. Usually
that's an address book that you want to keep.

Aloha Ben,

Maybe I'm trying to perform the wrong function, then. Perhaps archive isn't
what I want.

What I"m trying to do is create a complete back-up of contacts, all personal
folders, inbox, etc. on a regular basis "just in case" something happens to
the hard drive on my computer. My boss had this happen last week and he lost
almost everything in Outlook. I thought archiving would take care of this.

Are there other ways to do this?

Archives are NOT backups. Don't confuse the two. To make a backup of your
Outlook data, close Outlook completely and copy your PST file using Windows
Explorer.
