Backing up my C drive

I am trying to backup my C drive to an external hard drive on a daily basis.
Early in the copying process, the process stops and shows a message that says
"Cannot copy NT User. It is being used by another person. Close any
programs and try again." I am backing up to My Book 500 Gb drive.
I don't know what to do with this. All programs are closed and I am not on
a network. There is no "other person".
How do I resolve?

It sounds like your Shadow Copy service is turned off. That's what allows
files in use to be copied for backups. There are several files in use even
when you don't have any of your own programs running; they're system
operations.

Read up on Shadow Copy and figure out how to enable it.
