backing up messages

I recently formatted my computer but before I did that I dragged all my
messages from the "inbox" and the "deleted Items" folder onto an external
hard drive. Now I've reinstalled OE, and am wondering if there is some way
I can access those messages. Or better yet can I somehow drag them in the
inbox or deleted items folders again.
 
Best to ask this in an OE newsgroup. They will probably tell you that you
should have exported the messages, but I will leave them to let you know
your options.
