Backing up files

I recently downloaded SP2 for XP. Before installing, it
recommends backing up files. Therein lies the problem.
The backup utility doesn't seem to exist on my
computer. I thought I would check out system restore.
that isn't working either(not in my registry). I've figured
out how to fix that, but again, need to back up files in
case something goes wrong in doing that. Any ides on
what happened, where it went, how I can get it back, or
what I can do to get around it? I can't even reinstall XP
as that will require backing up files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you have Windows XP (Home) the backup utility is not
installed on your pc but it is on the Windows XP CD that
came with your pc. It is easy and very quick to install
the utility from this CD. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/update/backup.msp
x
to find out how to install this utility.
