background programs

i am new to xp and cant figure out how to turn off
programs before i install new software. please
help,thanks

The main thing here is just to stop major programs running..

CNTL+ALT+DEL>>Task Manager. goto the Applications tab and choose any
programs listed.

i just close all active windows.
have no problems and loaded things like 5 corel programs
and some pretty large games.
