I have a mystery application running in the background all the time. When I
try to log off, I get an error message that states a program is running and
I have the option to let it shut itself down or hit end now. First, the
program is running on another identity (i.e., c:\documents and
settings\user\local settings. . .). Second, whenever I let the program shut
itself down, I get a message saying the program has stopped responding.
Third, I can't see the name of the program that is running so I can manually
shut this down. Lastly, when I do a ctrl-alt-delete nothing shows up in the
applications tab.

How do I identify programs running in the background causing shutdown
errors? Thanks in adance.

Hi Larry,

Boot into the System Admin account or use an Admin account and make sure in
the Task Manager that show processes for all users are listed. Other than
that, run:

Windows XP Startup Programs Tracker

And read over the log file. Other checkpoints are: Start/Run/Msconfig and
the runkeys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In this case, under Current User. If per chance, this is a progam to be
kept:

This edit automatically ends tasks and timeouts that prevent programs from
shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit.

Good luck and keep us posted!
