Back up - Restore

How can I reduce the number of dates or back up points
stored in Win XP Pro? I'd like to reduce it down to 7 to
10 days normal back up points.

Hi

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then System Restore tab. Highlight the appropriate drive and then click 'Settings...'. You can alter the amount of disk that is allotted to SR with the slider. You may have to experiment to get the number of days you want, but the number of SR points depends a lot on how much installing/uninstalling you do.

Are you asking about "System Restore"? You don't choose the
number of days, but the amount of disk space it should use.
Right-click on My Computer and choose
Properties; then go to the System Restore tab.

If you experiment with different amounts of space, you should
find one that will give you around 7-10 restore points.

I tried using the "My Computer" |righ click "Properties"| Tab System
Resore| Settings method, but it would only allow about 12% of the disk
to be used. I wanted more like 33% of the space.

Also, ALL of the restore points sometimes go away for no reason that
I can see. How can I set things to only delete the old restore points
one at a time, preferably giving me the chance to decide when an old
point is kept rather than a new restore point being taken. In fact,
since ALL of the restore points go away, the trigger may not even be
making a restore point.

(My disks have 180 GB each and each has less than 30 GB in use
excluding the 22 GB set for restore points. The total space in
the Recyle Bin on each disk never exceeded 20 GB, so at least 100 GB
of space was free each of the times that Windows XP Professional
decided to delete all of my restore points.)

System Restore is best when used for rolling back to recent points in time.
That is how it was designed to be used.

Preserving older records of the system state should be done with system
backup software, such as NTBackup's ASR tool, or with imaging software.
