I am trying to back-up to a new external hard drive using
the standard back-up software. The backup stoppes a 4.0 GB
and indicates that there is now more room. It's a 40GB
drive how can I fix this?

It means that you have a external hard drive FAT32. I
have the same problem and was told to convert it to NTFS
using the command convert e: /fs:ntfs being E the letter
of the drive of your external hard drive. Click on START
button -Click RUN- In the OPEN box type convert e: /fs:ntfs
I was also told that whatever data was in the hard drive
will be saved and you will have tons of space and there
was no problem in restoring files to your C:\ drive FAT32
from the external drive NTFS.
Caveat: I have not done it yet. Good luck!!
