Back Up Problem

S

silkunicorn

I am using Windows XP SP3

I perform my Documents and Settings backup daily and usually it takes
about 4 hours to backup my 64 GB info. But since two days ago, it took
more than 21 hours to do the backup. I haven't changed any settings in
my XP or installed any new hardwares/softwares.

Can anyone advise me what is the problem that caused this slowness?
Any comments/suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you.

Need a lot more info. What do you backup to? What program do you use?
Documents and settings really 64 GB?
XP home? pro? Your system?

I am using Windows XP Backup option from the System Tools, and I back
it up to my external HD. Yes, it is 64 GB. And I am using Windows XP
Home with XP3.

Thank you.

Why are you doing a FULL backup daily? Are ALL of your files changing
DAILY? I'd recommend a FULL backup once a week, and a differential
backup DAILY.

That's not the point. The point is why my backup suddenly getting so
slow when it used to take 4 hours, not almost 21 hours.

Check for programs running in the background.

Nothing, because I run this backup overnight when I am not using my
PC. As I mentioned before, this only happens since the last two days.
It was fine for more than a year.

Only the obvious...you have *way* too much data. With 64 GB you could store
the name, address and telephone number of every person in the western
hemisphere. You might want to try incremental backups or synchronization.

Ridiculous comment. He stated it use to take 4 hours but now 21 hours.
Question is why.

It seems someone just couldn't take my question seriously. If you
don't want to help me (or someone else who might have that problem),
please leave this thread alone.

There might be a problem with my external hard drive but I don't know
what. If I chose to do the backup NOW and do it in the daytime, it was
done in about 4 hours successfully. But then next time when I left it
to do overnight again, it took more than 20 hours!

Any other comments will be much appreciated.

Do you have anything 'scheduled' to run in overnight hours?
Is auto update off?

Also, do you have a virus scanner running?

I do have virus scanning running. However, I have been doing this for
many months and never have any problems until the last few weeks. If
my virus scanning affects the backup, why would it happen suddenly but
not before?
