back up help

ok....i want to restore my xp computer;however, i don't
want to lose some important files, such as music and
essays. so my question is how do you back up these files
before i restore my computer? i really don't want to
erase these files....anyways..if anybody can help..i
would be thankful...

Depends what kind of restore you mean. If you mean a System Restore (the new
feature in WinXP) then it doesn't touch your data files - but as with all
system changes there is a slight risk that if something goes wrong and that
you might be left with a computer that won't work.

If you have a CD Writer or DVD Writer in your computer then you probably
also got a CD Burning program with it (A program like "Ahead Nero" or "Roxio
Easy CD" perhaps?). You need run one of these programs and follow the Wizard
they have.

You should really be doing regular backups in case your computer hardware
fails (my hard drive failed last month and all data on it was lost! - or at
least it would have been had I not got backup copies on CD). If you have a
CD or DVD Writer drive in your computer I recommend getting a copy of
"PowerQuest Drive Image" or perhaps "NTI BackupNow & NTI DriveImage". I
prefer the PowerQuest product having used both. It is capable of making a
full backup of your hard drive split over multiple CDs.
