AZ78X-VM and video driver problems

I would appreciate any help to stabilize my system, I constantly
receive blue screens or video refresh hangs (I can still hit the power
button on my system to initiate a shutdown but the screen never
refreshes).

I'm woring with a fresh install of Windows XP Pro and have installed
the latest updates from MS Windows Update Website. I have disabled
video acceleration with no change. I have installed latest drivers
from Asus and nVidia website with no change. I have disabled the
nvidia display adaptor in the device manager and the problem appears
to go away, however the display becomes all "speckled" and is not
usable.

Motherboard: Asus A7N8X-VM
Memory: 1 x PC2700 512MB
CPU: AMD 2500+ Athlon (Barton)
1 Sony 12x/8x/32x CDRW and 1 120GB Western Digital HDD
1 HP USB Keyboard and 1 USB Logitech Opitcal Wheel Mouse
1 Aopen PCI modem
Micro ATX Case

I don't play games nor have I tried overclocking the system to
optimize performance. I'm most concerned about a stable and reliable
system.

I'm running BIOS version 1007 and will install a floppy disk to
upgrade to the latest BIOS (I wish there were a CD image I could
download to flash the BIOS or a Windows flash utility). I'm not
confident this will resolve the problem as none of the BIOS release
notes listed this as a known problem.

I dont know what to do short of replacing the motherboard with a
different brand.

I've sent all the eror reports to Microsoft. If someone can direct me
to the location of these error reports I can post them here. My next
step may be to contact Asus technical support.

Regards,
Brian

have you considered it may be your video card?. i had a problem where the
display kept going wonky, i could still use windows under all the garble. i
found out that the fan on the video card had seized up and the card was
overheating.

try taking the case off and powering up the pc to make sure everything is
spinning.
