How do I awaken my Dell 5100 Inspiron laptop with my keyboard (a Micorosoft
wireless keyboard)
I have a sleep button on the keyboard which puts the computer to sleep, but
to wake up, I have to open the laptop an hit the power button (what a royal
pain!) ?

It seems there is no other way - sorry, no keyboard pwr-on!

If you have the same model keyboard as me, simply hitting any key should
'wake' the machine. The effect is not instantaneous, it likely takes 30
secs to a minute and sometimes you need to hit the key (I use ENTER) several
times. Have you tried waking the machine from sleep mode without the
keyboard being connected? That will isolate the problem to the keyboard or
the laptop.

When my laptop, (Toshiba Satellite), goes into sleep mode, there are
occasions when it doesn't wake up and I need to reboot.
