Avoid IE OverWriting Existing Sites Already Loaded?

Even if I have an instance of IE minimized to the taskbar if I attempt to
load a new site using a shortcut the page the shortcut loads will cause IE
to be restored from the tasktray and the new site will load into the window
and over-write that page I want to keep loaded.

Is there a way to reconfigure IE somehow? A registry setting?
