AVIs in PPT2003: problems

I have a 3-4 second AVI file that I want to play as part of an animation. However, when I
try to play it, I get 3-4 seconds of completely black image. It plays fine in Media
Player, If I right-click "Play Movie" in PPT 2003 I get the same phenomenon: 3 seconds of
black image.

Also, there is a serious bug in PPT2003; if I selection the option to hide when not
playing, it hangs PowerPoint and only the task manager can kill it. It otherwise is
catatonic. Since I can use the animation entry/exit to control its visibility this does
not pose a challenge, but it was annoying when I first encountered it.

I tried it as an animated GIF (export from Adobe Premiere, where I extracted the 3 seconds
from the sequence I wanted), and it is far too slow; more like 1fps instead of the 30fps
required. There seems to be no parameter in Adobe Premiere to set the timing, so I'm
assuming that this is an intrinsic problem (the animated GIF file is 17MB, the AVI is
11MB).

Any suggestions as to what I might do to get this to work?
thanks

I suspect you have the video file too "deep" in the folder structure. PPT
has a known issue with long file/path names.

Try creating a folder with a short path (NOT the desktop) like: "C:\test".

Place the presentation and the video file in the new folder.

Delete the video file from the presentation and reinsert it from the new
location.

It is actually

\\server5\x\cmnh\rotating galaxy 2.avi

It is interesting that Microsoft products can't even handle the normal paths that
Microsoft operating systems use...has it occurred to anyone this might be a bug?

For that matter, why can't I edit this name? Deleting the image and re-inserting it means
I have to re-create all the animation timings again!

Also, that path is the same directory the presentation is located in.

Why is this component of the software looking like something a summer intern did?
