AVI Quality suffers when placed into the Storyboard

I have 4 AVI files. If the are individually played using Media player the
quality is perfect. As soon as I import the AVI file and drag & drop it into
the story board the quality becomes appalling. Also once I 'splice' the AVI
files into one coherent movie - no matter what the best quality option I use
when I save - the resulting AVI file is no where near as good as the original
AVI files. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for that. The GSpot utility identified the CODEC as

4CC: CRAM/msvc
Name: Microsoft Video 1
CODEC NOT installed

So where do I go from here - how do I convert the AVI file or get the right
CODEC? It does seem strange that the original AVI file plays fine it only
goes perculiar when added to a Windows Movie Maker storyboard.

Thanks for all your help so far.
