AVI movies poor quality, jerky

When I convert my After Effects 6 movies from Quicktime to AVI (using
Quicktime Pro with Cinepak codec) they have lousy quality (especially dark
type on white background). And they run jerky most of the time. I'm making
PPT CD's to send out as sales presentations, so I have to play it safe not
knowing how the recipients' PC is configured. I'm using PPT 2003 with the
viewer installed.
I have a PPT presentation from somebody else that has much better quality
movies, also produced in After Effects. Do I need to go to a program like
Discreet Cleaner or such to improve my compression, or is it something else?

Thank you in advance, I've been trying everything for months now.

..avi files are the "guaranteed to work on a PC" format, but they are a low
quality image for the most part. I pretty much gave up on .avi movies and
began using mpeg's. I have had almost zero problems with clients
distributing presentations that play mpeg level 1 movies. The quality is
greatly improved, the size smaller, etc.
