My problem with AVG is roughly the same, the setup was installing Compress
Adware? I have now deleted CA and now when trying to unzip AVG with setup it
is telling me an error COMMDLG.DLL file is missing. After clicking ok it
then gives another error with a weird folder name with squidgy line saying
setup or one of its components is missing. I have now downloaded AVG about
10 times but to no avail.
Can anyone help?

The first thing I would do if I was in your predicament is download
RegCleaner or I forget what it's called now, and delete any and all
references to AVG and then I'd try downloading AVG again.

I've come late to this thread. What operating system are we talking
about?

Petter,

Tried your advice, removed all files etc of free AVG then tried to
re-install
still the same problem regarding the COMMDLG.DLL file.

Thanks for your help anyway.

In addition to a "downloads" directory ~ you should create a separate
directory (folder) with which to do the installation. If you run some kinds
of installation programs, they auto-unzip into several files and then pass
control over to one of them (usually "setup.exe"). If you have the remnants
of many previous installers laying around the installer may try to run the
wrong "setup.exe" and confuse things.

Club Ninja's response to me was not reponsive to my post
nor to the OP's original question. Nobody even asked for
anyone's opinion about AVG good or bad.

Maybe Club Ninja was attempting to troll a diehard AVG fan
and missed the mark?

Well I am sorry if you didn't like my post.
AVG lets all of the SWEN stuff in while Avast jumps on it and kills it.
AVG does not even detect it I have tryed both free version 6 & version 7
demo.

but opinons are like buttholes everybody has got them and all of them stink.

That is just my opinion.

Are you talking about its email scanner? Or the main program, or the
resident shield?
Because I use 6 and 7 in various different machines, and whilst I think the
email scanner leaves something to be desired on the outgoing side, 7 has
never missed a SWEN when properly configured on a POP3 mailbox.
Neither 6 nor 7, properly updated, would ever allow a SWEN to be executed or
even saved without alarming.

When I check my email it dosent say anything about swen but Avast does.
Does this mean AVG lets it in ??

I suspect it means you haven't configured the email scanner.
Which I must admit is a bit user-hostile.
But persistence pays, except if you use IMAP mail like I do.

I had a problem with AVG a couple of years ago with the opaserv worm.It kept
changing and AVG couldn't keep up.Everytime it would find the worm and
delete,the worm just renamed itself.I ended up reformating to get rid of
it(what a pain).I am using avast now and have had no problems.

Well I am sorry if you didn't like my post.

It's not that I didn't like it, it was just an answer to a question
as yet unasked in this part of the thread. It's like that IPArmor
spam we get in here (and sometimes Tracker) posting something
completely unrelated to the discussion at hand.

Anyway ~ since we are on the subject, I think that they *all* pretty
much suck. It seems that they don't do enough for me automatically
so that I can be completely clueless about what *my* role should be
in the security of my own computer ~ and those do that try to do
everything for me are just too bloated and resource hungry for me
to still be able do the *real* computer work of checking out every
executable file I find on the KaZaA and/or Warez p2p network(s).
